Ignacy Łukasiewicz was born on 8 March 1822 in Zaduszniki, the youngest of five children. His father, Józef Łukasiewicz, was a minor noble and veteran of Kościuszko's Uprising; his mother was Apolonia, née Świetlik. Financial difficulties forced the family to move to Rzeszów, where Ignacy attended secondary school but failed to pass examinations and left in 1836. He then moved to Łańcut to work as a pharmacist's assistant. In 1845 he joined the illegal Centralization of the Polish Democratic Society, and was arrested by Austrian authorities on 19 February 1846. He was imprisoned in Lwów and released on 27 December 1847 due to lack of evidence, but remained under police observation.

Łukasiewicz's significance lies in his foundational contributions to the petroleum industry. In autumn 1852, together with John Zeh and Piotr Mikolasch, he distilled kerosene from seep crude oil in Galicia, creating a new lighting fuel. He invented the modern kerosene lamp in 1853 and introduced the first modern street lamp in Europe that same year. In 1854 he opened the world's first modern oil well at Bóbrka, and in 1856 built the world's first industrial oil refinery at Ulaszowice. His work transformed kerosene from a niche product into a commercial commodity, spurring economic development in Galicia. He also became a prominent philanthropist, founding a spa, a chapel, and a church, and was elected to the Galician Sejm. His legacy includes the National Oil Society and the first Oil Industry Congress in 1877.

• Łukasiewicz was arrested on 19 February 1846 for involvement in the Polish Democratic Society and imprisoned in Lwów until 27 December 1847.
